The 802.16d standard defines the MAC and PHY layer of the WiMAX technology, only for fixed systems.
The MAC definition is very powerful and manages different kinds of QoS simultaneously. The PHY definition has a large number of options and capabilities; among those are: adaptive modulation and coding, STC diversity, MIMO encoding, adaptive antenna systems and other advanced techniques.
Although the 802.16d defines a wide technology the WiMAX Forum has selected a subset of this standard: OFDM-256, PMP (point to multipoint), 3.5 GHz with 3.5 and 7 MHz bandwidths or 5.8 GHz band.
